OpenStack uses a consistent set of application programming interfaces (APIs) to abstract those virtual resources 1 step further into discrete pools used to power standard cloud computing tools that administrators and users interact with directly.


But while virtualization management platforms make it easier to manipulate the features and functions of virtual resources, OpenStack actually uses the virtual resources to run a combination of tools. These tools create a cloud environment that meets the National Institute of Standards and Technology's 5 criteria of cloud computing: a network, pooled resources, a user interface, provisioning capabilities, and automatic resource control/allocation.


There are 6 stable, core services that handle compute, networking, storage, identity, and images while more than a dozen optional ones vary in developmental maturity. Those 6 core services are the infrastructure that allows the rest of the projects to handle dashboarding, orchestration, bare-metal provisioning, messaging, containers, and governance.


OpenStack is the leading open source option for building public cloud environments. Whether your company is a multibillion-dollar publicly traded enterprise or a startup, you can use OpenStack to set up public clouds with services that compete with major public cloud providers.


So, Houston created the first individual, small-business cloud storage service, Dropbox. It took off like a rocket. But, of course, since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, dozens of inexpensive cloud storage services are now available. However, beyond giving you storage, they're very different from one another.


Microsoft 365 users get an extra terabyte per user starting with the $6-per-month subscription. This plan maxes out at six people or 6TB of storage. For $12.50 per user per month with an annual subscription, Microsoft 365 Business Standard uses 1TB of cloud storage and Microsoft Office and Teams.


iDrive is an outstanding and inexpensive cloud storage service. I especially like that for backups, iDrive doesn't lock you down to a single computer. You can use one account to back up your Windows and macOS desktops, your Android smartphones, iPhones and tablets, your network drives, and even your Linux server.


You can set up cloud storage either on an office server or off your own external servers. How much? All you can eat! I have a 4TB Nextcloud drive in my office and another terabyte off my co-hosted server rack.


There are four main types of cloud computing: private clouds, public clouds, hybrid clouds, and multiclouds. There are also three main types of cloud computing services: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platforms-as-a-Service (PaaS), and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).


Every cloud abstracts, pools, and shares scalable computing resources across a network. Every cloud type also enables cloud computing, which is the act of running workloads within that system. And every cloud is created using a unique mix of technologies, which almost always includes an operating system, some kind of management platform, and application programming interfaces (APIs). Virtualization and automation software can also be added to every kind of cloud for additional capabilities or increased efficiencies.


But private clouds no longer have to be sourced from on-premise IT infrastructure. Organizations are now building private clouds on rented, vendor-owned data centers located off-premises, which makes any location and ownership rules obsolete. This has also led to a number of private cloud subtypes, including:


Customers create and use a private cloud that's deployed, configured, and managed by a third-party vendor. Managed private clouds are a cloud delivery option that helps enterprises with understaffed or underskilled IT teams provide better private cloud services and infrastructure.


A multicloud environment might exist on purpose (to better control sensitive data or as redundant storage space for improved disaster recovery) or by accident (usually the result of shadow IT). Either way, having multiple clouds is becoming more common across enterprises that seek to improve security and performance through an expanded portfolio of environments.

Rather than maintaining their own data centers for storage, organizations can only pay for the amount of cloud storage they are actually consuming and do so without the worries of overseeing the daily maintenance of the storage infrastructure. The result is higher availability, speed, scalability and security for the data storage environment.


Building a DR site and testing a business continuity plan can be an extremely expensive and time-consuming task with fixed assets. When built in the cloud, however, organizations can replicate their production site and constantly replicate data and configuration settings, saving considerable time and resources.

1. NextCloud. This open-source project offers a mobile app and has a pretty good auto-upload feature. You can use it as the host for other photo management apps, too. And it can host non-photos like documents, calendars, contacts and the like.


2. Photoprism. This open-source app uses Google TensorFlow to automatically classify images. It extracts location data, does duplicate detection and can sync with Nextcloud.


3. Piwigo. This open-source photo gallery software offers geolookup and multi-user support. Its album features are great, including batch management, album hierarchies and more. It also has a mobile app.
