These tools create a cloud environment that meets the National Institute of Standards and Technology's 5 criteria of cloud computing: a network, pooled resources, a user interface, provisioning capabilities, and automatic resource control/allocation.

There are 6 stable, core services that handle compute, networking, storage, identity, and images while more than a dozen optional ones vary in developmental maturity. Those 6 core services are the infrastructure that allows the rest of the projects to handle dashboarding, orchestration, bare-metal provisioning, messaging, containers, and governance.

So, Houston created the first individual, small-business cloud storage service, Dropbox. It took off like a rocket. You can set up cloud storage either on an office server or off your own external servers. How much? All you can eat! I have a 4TB Nextcloud drive in my office and another terabyte off my co-hosted server rack.

There are four main types of cloud computing: private clouds, public clouds, hybrid clouds, and multiclouds. There are also three main types of cloud computing services: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platforms-as-a-Service (PaaS), and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).

Every cloud abstracts, pools, and shares scalable computing resources across a network. Every cloud type also enables cloud computing, which is the act of running workloads within that system. And every cloud is created using a unique mix of technologies, which almost always includes an operating system, some kind of management platform, and application programming interfaces (APIs). Virtualization and automation software can also be added to every kind of cloud for additional capabilities or increased efficiencies.

But private clouds no longer have to be sourced from on-premise IT infrastructure. Organizations are now building private clouds on rented, vendor-owned data centers located off-premises, which makes any location and ownership rules obsolete. This has also led to a number of private cloud subtypes, including:

Rather than maintaining their own data centers for storage, organizations can only pay for the amount of cloud storage they are actually consuming and do so without the worries of overseeing the daily maintenance of the storage infrastructure. The result is higher availability, speed, scalability and security for the data storage environment.

Building a DR site and testing a business continuity plan can be an extremely expensive and time-consuming task with fixed assets. When built in the cloud, however, organizations can replicate their production site and constantly replicate data and configuration settings, saving considerable time and resources.

1. NextCloud. This open-source project offers a mobile app and has a pretty good auto-upload feature. You can use it as the host for other photo management apps, too. And it can host non-photos like documents, calendars, contacts and the like.
