The film follows Michael Newman, a workaholic architect who neglects his family and his own health. He is constantly under pressure from his boss, John Ammer, who makes him work overtime and miss important family events. One night, he goes to a Bed Bath & Beyond store to buy a universal remote for his home appliances. There, he meets Morty, an eccentric employee who gives him a special remote that can control not only his devices, but also his life.
Michael discovers that the remote has many features, such as pause, rewind, fast-forward, skip, and volume. He uses it to his advantage, such as muting his dog's barking, skipping a fight with his wife, and fast-forwarding through boring or unpleasant moments. However, he also realizes that the remote has some side effects, such as altering his memory, changing his appearance, and affecting his relationships. He also learns that the remote has a mind of its own, and starts to program itself according to his preferences. For example, it skips every time he gets sick, or every time Ammer asks him to work.
As a result, Michael's life begins to spiral out of control. He misses out on important moments with his family and friends, such as his father's death, his son's graduation, and his daughter's wedding. He also becomes obese, bald, and divorced from Donna. He eventually becomes the CEO of his company, but at the cost of losing everything he cares about. He confronts Morty, who reveals that he is the Angel of Death, and that the remote is a test of his character. Morty tells Michael that he can't undo what he has done, and that he will die soon.
Michael regrets his choices and tries to make amends with his family. He apologizes to Donna and tells her that he loves her. He also reconciles with his son Ben, who has followed his footsteps as a workaholic. He encourages Ben to pursue his dream of becoming a singer instead of working for Ammer. He then collapses in the street and dies in Ben's arms.
However, Michael wakes up in the Bed Bath & Beyond store, realizing that everything was a dream. He sees Morty, who tells him that he gave him a second chance to live his life better. Michael returns home and hugs his family. He then quits his job and throws away the remote. He decides to spend more time with his loved ones and enjoy every moment of his life.

On Metacritic, the film has a score of 45 out of 100, based on 36 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[9] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A-" on an A+ to F scale. Roger Ebert gave the film three out of four stars, calling it "a surprisingly good movie" that "starts out like an Adam Sandler comedy" but "ends up like an episode of The Twilight Zone".[11] He also praised the film's message, saying that "it's about how we use the gift of life".[11]
However, some critics were less impressed by the film. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave the film one and a half stars out of four, calling it "a one-joke movie" that "turns into a one-joke nightmare" and "a shameless rip-off of It's A Wonderful Life".[13] He also criticized Sandler's performance, saying that he "plays the same character he always does" and that he "can't act his way out of a wet paper bag".[13] Richard Roeper gave the film a thumbs down, saying that it was "a mess" and "a waste of time".[14] He also said that the film was "not funny, not clever, not original, not touching, not anything".[14] Here are some more sections for the article: Soundtrack
The film's soundtrack was composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams, who also worked with Sandler on other films such as The Longest Yard, Big Daddy, and Hotel Transylvania. The soundtrack features songs by various artists, such as The Cars, The Kinks, The Beach Boys, and Frank Sinatra. Some of the songs are used to illustrate the different time periods that Michael travels to with the remote. For example, "Do It Again" by The Kinks plays when Michael rewinds to his childhood, and "Linger" by The Cranberries plays when Michael pauses his wedding night. The soundtrack also includes an original song by Sandler, called "Lonesome Kicker", which he sings as Ben in the future.
The soundtrack was released on June 20, 2006 by Lakeshore Records. It received positive reviews from critics, who praised Gregson-Williams' score and the song selection. The soundtrack peaked at number 142 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 8 on the Top Soundtracks chart.[15] The song "Lonesome Kicker" was nominated for Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards, but lost to "The Song of the Heart" from Happy Feet.[16]
