Plot




The film begins with the wedding of John (Arya) and Regina (Nayanthara), who are forced to marry each other by their parents. John is a software engineer who loves his colleague Keerthana (Nazriya Nazim), while Regina is a journalist who loves her colleague Surya (Jai). John and Regina do not get along well and often argue with each other.


One day, John gets drunk and reveals to Regina that he had a girlfriend named Keerthana, who died in a car accident. He blames himself for her death and says that he married Regina only to please his father. Regina is shocked and hurt by his confession. She also reveals to him that she had a boyfriend named Surya, who was killed by a bomb blast while covering a news story. She says that she married John only to fulfill her father's wish.


John and Regina decide to live separately and file for divorce. However, they are forced to stay together for six months by the court. During this period, they slowly start to understand each other's pain and become friends. They also meet their respective ex-lovers' families and realize how much they loved them.


Meanwhile, Surya's younger brother Sarathy (Santhanam) falls in love with Keerthana's younger sister Nisha (Swetha Nair) and proposes to her. John and Regina help them to convince their parents and arrange their marriage. On the day of the wedding, John and Regina realize that they have fallen in love with each other and decide to cancel their divorce. They confess their feelings to each other and live happily ever after.

Production




The film was announced in August 2012 by A. R. Murugadoss, who decided to produce the debut directorial venture of his former assistant Atlee. The film was titled Raja Rani, which means King & Queen in Tamil. The film was said to be inspired by the Hollywood films The Break-Up (2006) and 500 Days of Summer (2009). The film was shot in Chennai, Coimbatore, Bangalore and Hyderabad.


The film's music was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, who collaborated with Atlee for the first time.
